Nice to Meet You

Patrick Merrill

I started apprenticing for family members at a young age. My step father when I was 12; operating heavy equipment to develop roadways and housing developments. My uncle as I got older; a mason and landscaper. And my father a craftsman of anything he put his hands to whenever I had the opportunity. I enjoy any challenge but appreciate most the opportunity to be creative and provide new found function to homes and lives through landscaping and construction. I married my best friend and constant supporter Samantha. We have a golden retriever named Bodie who regularly visits jobs and comes along for most estimates. He is the GOLDEN Rule.

When I officially started my business I jumped in and bought equipment and hired help. I found work and every once and a while finished the job with something left over to buy groceries or pay rent with. I learned a lot, quickly. We installed patios and plants. We mowed lawns. We dug cellar holes and hauled gravel. We did septic systems and underground utilities. We plowed snow and salted parking lots. Once I decided snow plowing wasn’t going to keep the wheel turning in the winter I switched to masonry and interior renovations. My help moved on to military service and beyond. I got the chance to trim the expenses and operate lean. I loved it! I started being selective with the work I would take on. I even got to enjoy weekends without working. I began operating exclusively by word of mouth referral. Each referral brought about slightly different work. I decided then that I wasn’t going to fit a standard business model of landscaper, carpenter, mason or builder. When I found the chance between projects during the winter of 2019 I changed the name of my business to Golden Rule Contractors. I believe this to best fit me and those I choose to work with through the various projects we take on.
